TampaWell, activated by Tampa General Hospital in partnership with the City of Tampa, is a revolutionary health and wellness initiative with the goal of making Tampa the ultimate wellness destination in the United States. Our mission at Tampa General Hospital is to empower communities and transform lives. TampaWell is the embodiment of this mission. This endeavor focuses not only on preventative health to reduce chronic disease and prevent individuals from experiencing repeated hospitalizations; it also supports the city's most at-risk residents by addressing underlying social factors that impact health. This multi-year effort focuses on three areas: Regular movement, healthy eating and access to healthy food, and positive mental wellness.
One of the ways that TampaWell encourages healthy eating and access to healthy food is through the TampaWell Food Pharmacy & Community Garden. This garden is a unique gathering place that helps nourish the bodies and minds of residents in East Tampa. This initiative aims to increase community members' consumption of fruits and vegetables, increase household food security, reduce healthcare provider usage and associated costs, and reduce instances of diabetes, hypertension, and obesity. The TampaWell Food Pharmacy & Community Garden provides a platform to fight food insecurity and educate current and future generations on the importance of healthy eating on their overall wellbeing.
The TampaWell Food Pharmacy & Community Garden offers access to nutritious foods for high-risk patients and community members. In partnership with the Feeding Tampa Bay Food Rx Program and the Tampa YMCA Veggie Van Produce Prescription Program, the TampaWell Food Pharmacy will help combat food insecurity in East Tampa by bringing nutrient-rich foods to food-insecure patients – free of charge. TGH medical providers will screen patients at these clinics using the Hunger Vital Sign screen tool to identify those who are food insecure and have a co-occurring nutrition-related chronic condition or disease. Patients will then receive a referral to visit the TampaWell Food Pharmacy and collect specific foods aimed to support their diagnosis.
We believe that the combination of a provider prescription, healthy food access, and education and motivation to make changes will translate to valuable health improvements.
Our goal is to raise $6,500, which will support 10 TampaWell patients with healthy and nutritious food for 6 months. With your help, we can improve the health and well-being of our East Tampa neighbors!
