At Tampa General Hospital, everyone is treated so that they can live to see precious moments in their lives -- the joy of their daughter's wedding, the wonder of their grandchild’s birth. Tampa General Hospital did this for me, and they were able to do so because of people just like you.

Support of the TGH Every One fund gives patients like Betsy a new chance at life. This is Betsy's TGH Story:

"I have had many inpatient and outpatient visits to TGH starting in the Spring of 2010 when I underwent a bilateral hip replacement. The care I received during these visits led me to a smooth recovery, allowing me to attend my older daughter’s wedding in November.

Life then took an unexpected turn when I was diagnosed and treated for breast cancer at USF and Moffitt. During the surgery, I had a cardiac episode that led to further testing and eventually my transfer to TGH. This was a pivotal point during my journey, as I was advised that I would need a heart transplant. Once the shock and fear of this news settled, I returned home to wait for approval for the transplant list.

I became a ‘regular’ at TGH Harborside Outpatient Cardiac Clinic and received endless care and support that allowed me to enjoy the birth of my first grandbaby, the wedding of my second daughter, work, holidays, and vacations with family and friends. During the Spring of 2017, I began to notice a decrease in my energy and overall strength, yet I still had a year to go before eligibility for the transplant list. Miraculously, due to consistent advocacy from my care team, I was able to be added to the list in August of 2017.

On November 7, I received the call to ‘come on down.’ The very next day I received my gift of life and woke in the CICU surrounded by tubes, wires, and machines and feeling stronger than I could have imagined. I was able to return home within two weeks and gradually resume day-to-day life.

However, my transplant journey wasn't done. In the Fall of 2019, I began to experience symptoms of rejection, leading to a second transplant in June of 2020. It was much more difficult but ultimately gave me another chance and allowed me to enjoy precious time with family and friends over the past three and a half years. To say I am grateful despite ongoing challenges is an understatement. My prayers and gratitude always include my organ donors and their families as well as my medical team family and friends who have helped me not only survive but enjoy many days with much to look forward to."
